Spectacular ever-changing scenery, rugged landscapes, volcanic peaks, picturesque country-side and sandy beaches. The Chatham Island locals are such genuine, friendly, welcoming people who have a strong community spirit. You will really enjoy meeting them.
Our stay on the Island will be very relaxing, fun and full of very ‘Chatham Islands’ experiences. Peaceful sleeps, enjoyable breakfasts, lunch stops “somewhere” and relaxing dinners at different Island places. Free time when you wish.
We will enjoy sightseeing most of the Island and the Villages, including all the most well-known Island Icons. Meeting and chatting to many of the locals. See places such as, Wharekauri, Splattered Rock and Mt Chudleigh Reserve, Tikitiki Hill – Para Wood pigeons and endemic plants at the Awatotara Reserve, Owenga Village, local artist Eva Cherie’ delightful gallery.
We will travel to the most Eastern point of the Chatham Islands (Millenium Site) for views of Pitt Island and Shelley Beach to take the opportunity to look for shells. Visit the DOC Nursery to meet staff and see their extensive work programme. Rangi ika Reserve and a local Church.
Visiting a private Island Farm, meeting and chatting with the owners. Visit Blind Jim’s at Te Whanga Lagoon and may-even search for fossilized sharks’ teeth. Kaingaroa via the Ocean Mail Reserve and Torotoro Memorial – home of the Moriori Tree Carvings.
Hapupu National Reserve, take a short walk (only if you wish) to the only accessible seal colony, Kaingaroa town and the site of Broughton Landing 1791 (early whaling village). We will see the Sunderland Flying Boat which is being restored. With our daily Island “ticki-touring” we will really appreciate the size, beauty and culture of the Chatham Islands.
A fishing trip is included – great fun and you can expect to catch blue cod and groper. Fish n’ chip meal – a must!
Optional Pitt Island tour (weather permitting). (Not included in trip cost) Either by boat or plane.
