Welcome. Would you like to do both Hobbiton & the Rotorua Highlights together? Then this is the tour. We may go to Rotorua first or we may go to Hobbiton first, depending on the timing so we can see the shows. After greeting you on your arrival into the Port of Tauranga, we will travel along our scenic harbour and beach of Mount Maunganui (to show you our local area) before an adjoining countryside journey across the hills of The Kaimai Range, where you will enjoy spectacular views of The Bay of Plenty and Waikato regions. This tour is going to provide you with a wonderful day.
If we go to Hobbiton first then we arrive at the set of The Lord of The Rings and the Hobbit Films. Aided by your local guide, this 2 hour tour immerses you in the ways of the Shire, delighting you with the unblemished landscape, and allowing you a sneak peek into the hobbit holes of Bilbo, Frodo and Sam. Stand under the party tree and hear fascinating details of how the Hobbiton set was created and you will see how this Waikato farmland in Matamata was transformed into The Shire from Middle-Earth.
This special visit finishes in the newly opened Green Dragon Inn, where you can taste the local shire Ale, Cider or Gingerbeer, and maybe spot the likes of those cheeky hobbits Merry and Pippin.
We move on from the lush dairying country of the Waikato through the scenic Mamaku Ranges to one of the most popular tourist destinations in New Zealand, the geothermal wonderland that is Rotorua.
We will stop for a lunch-break at a local cafe, and following lunch we arrive at either Te Puia or Whakarewarewa The Maori Living Village to see the Maori cultural performance show and the geothermal activities. Here you will be guided through the Village and given an insight to Maori culture not experienced anywhere else in New Zealand. We speak with the Maori people and hear the fascinating stories of how, for generations after the Mt Tarawera eruption, they have lived here in harmony and have used the geothermal energy everyday for cooking and bathing.
You will be stunned at the sight of the powerful iconic Pohutu geyser, steams of boiling water and bubbling hot mud pools, making Whakarewarewa a geothermal wonderland.
After your tour you can sit back and relax as you are entertained by the Te Pakira Maori Culture Group of songs and dance, including the famous Maori Haka. This Cultural Performance is one not to be missed!
The tour then departs Rotorua and returns to Tauranga and right back to your Cruise Ship. An amazing day with so much to see.
