Departing from a central pickup point in Christchurch, it's only an hours drive north to the wine region of Waipara, one New Zealand’s fastest growing wine regions with over 75 vineyards covering more than 1,200 hectares of plantings. This is a sub region of the Canterbury wine region and is renowned for producing unique richer, spicier Pinot Noirs and Rieslings.
Protected by the Teviotdale coastal hills from the cool easterly winds, the soil types range from gravely deposits on flats and terraces in the central-west of the valley, limestone derived clays on the valley floor and eastern hillsides, and gravely loams over alluvial subsoil in the southern part of the region. Combined with a long hot autumn, these provide each vineyard with unique characters that contribute to a range of wine styles including Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
Join our small group tour as we visit at least two of the leading wineries, plus time for lunch (at your cost) and to explore the area.
